A conversational user interface (CUI) is a text or speech interface that adopts a style loosely based on human conversation. It is particulatly common in speech assistants such as home automation, smart speakers and mobile phone speech-AI systems. It is also found in many web-based chatbots, both those using older chat frameworks, and those using LLMs. Typically CUIs have a limited domain and may use restricted vocabularies or grammars focused on those domains. Due to the availability of LLMs, conversation-style interfaces are being adopted in many domians including coding.
